The following appeared in a memo from a vice president of Quiot Manufacturing.
"During the past year, Quiot Manufacturing had 30 percent more on-the-job accidents than at the nearby Panoply Industries plant, where the work shifts are one hour shorter than ours. Experts say that significant contributing factors in many on-the-job accidents are fatigue and sleep deprivation among workers. Therefore, to reduce the number of on-the-job accidents at Quiot and thereby increase productivity, we should shorten each of our three work shifts by one hour so that employees will get adequate amounts of sleep."
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
In the given passage author has highlighted that fatigue and sleep deprivation are the major reason behind the increasing job accidents at Quiot Manufacturing. Author has compared this rate with another industry where the job duration is one hour less than Quiot Manufacturing to strengthen his argument. Author has concluded that reducing shift duration by one hour will ensure the reduction in job accident. Though author’s claim has well merit but it depends upon some assumption whose validity must be verified before accepting them.
Primarily, author has informed about increasing rate of job accidents at Quiot Manufacturing. But never discuss the nature of those accidents. If the accidents are fatigue related then major of those accidents will show that. There are several kinds of accidents that can happen at the industries. Every kind of accident has its own reason. So to accept the fact that they are happening only due to extended work hour we need more evidences.
Secondly, the comparison with nearby Panoply Industries plant seems to be unjustifiable. The Panoply Industry may be other type of industry where the job risk is lower than Quiot Manufacturing. It would have been possible that working environment and kind of work is different as compare to Panoply Plant. So clearly it is not possible to compare the working hour of those two industry unless their working condition are similar. So the comparison is unconvincing.
Thirdly, author exclusively assumes that there are no other reasons behind the job accident except sleep-deprivation, which may not always true hold. It is highly possible that there are some other subtle reasons behind those accidents. So first of all a detail investigation must be carried out to find out the exact reason behind those accidents. Then only correct measure can be taken to reduce it.
In conclusion, the arguments behind assumptions are unconvincing. To strengthen the arguments, the author must provide evidences that there are no other reasons other than the assumptions if we think logically one hour extra will do a little in contributing fatigue and sleep deprivation. Instead of recommending shorten one hour shift, the management should be careful about their safety in the job site and also ensure they are properly followed.
