The professor explains three arguments oppossing the points stated in the reading passage about the idea that Sinosauropteryx was not a feathered dinosaur in spite of other critics believes.
First, the reading passage states that fine lines would not indicate functional structures, in fact, those were formed after animal's death and decomposed into fibers. However, the lecturer sees that the lines are not fibers caused by decomposition of dinosaur's skin. Indeed, many other animals' fossils have found at the same place, suggesting that their functional skin structure have been well preserved without mentioned decomposition. Thus, we can hypothesize that Sinosauropteryx's lines might be feathers.
Second, the professor opposses the idea presented in the reading passage claims that such lines could be remains of frills rather than remains of feathers. She states that feathers are usually consist of proteins like beta-caroten while frills don't contain such material. Hence, this idea has been repudiated by the professor too.
Third, the reading passage asserts that animals employ feathers in functions like flying or thermoregulation. In contrast, the professor disproves the idea by claiming that feathers have had other applications beyond mentioned cases. For instance, peacocks use feather to attract their mate. So, as feathers of Sinosauropteryx were colorful, orange and white, they could use it as a tool in looking for an appropriate male. Therefore, based on aforementioned arguments, this idea is rejected either.
