The professor explains three clear arguments opposing the points stated in the reading about the reasons of yellow cedars' decline in populations.
First, the reading passage states that insect parasites could have been reason of yellow cedar decline whereas cedar bark beetle, especially the beetle larvae, has been known as major killer of this tree. Nevertheless, the professor brings up the idea of yellow cedar's resistance against insects by employing powerful chemical substances which are harmful to insects. Also, as she stated, it has been indicated that mostly damaged or sick trees are prone to danger of the bark beetle not healthy ones. Therefore, the professor repudiates this hypothesis.
Second, the professor opposes the idea presented in the reading passage about bears' role in yellow cedar decline. As she claimed, although bear may have negative effect to yellow cedars, their population and scope of damage are very limited. Therefore, bears impact on overall population decline is dubious. Furthermore, she states that many yellow cedars are exist in islands so that there is no bears to damage trees. However, yellow cedars population is decreasing in these ares either.
Third and last, the reading passage asserts that climate change may be the blame because temperature fluctuations in the last hundred years affected roots growing behavior. So, change in timing of root growth may have had severe results in trees health in the way that roots, which are so sensitive to freezing, may damage by cold temperature. On the contrary, the professor disproves the idea due to the fact that yellow cedars population in warmer latitudes are faster decreasing rather than colder elevations.
