In the reading passage, the author claims that the genetic modification, a process through which scientists change the organism's genes, has a variety of advantages by pointing out three reason of support. However, finding all the ideas implausible and questionable, the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the text and states that the experts are not assured whether these modified plants are as great as their first condition and she demonstrates some evidence to refute the mentioned benefits.
At first, the author argues that the modified species are more resistant against unfavorable conditions by bringing up the papaya modified plants as an example. Conversely, the lecturer points out that their resistance does not guarantee their survival. In fact, having exposed to adverse circumstances such as the invasion of insects or bad climate, non-modified plants may lose 1 type of them. Nonetheless, due to their genetic diversification, the rest of that species will be capable to tolerate. Although, if one particular factor such as a new pest adds to the modified-trees environments, almost all of them will wipe out as their uniform genetics and cannot thrive in atmosphere for which they are not designed.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that economic advantages for farmers can be accounted as other positive consequences of planting the modified-plant. On the other hand, the professor disputes this idea by clarifying that there are some hidden cost in this method. As an example, not only do farmers pay for each modified seed three times more than a normal seed, but also each time that the farmers intend to plant the seeds they should purchase them from the companies providing them. Therefore, the cost adds up.
Finally, the author asserts that this process hinder overusing of wild trees. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by subscribing to the point that having altered the genes of plants, people render the natural plants more vulnerable. Indeed, these modified plants grow aggressively since they consume most of the soil nutrition, water and other factors which their abundance is vital for nurturing the natural trees. Consequently, so dense become the natural environment with modified plants that no source left for germinating the wild trees.
