The author casts doubt on the probability of an ingenious weapon which is supposed to be employed by Greeks. The lecturer, however, refutes the claims, since she believes that none of the mentioned arguments are convincing.
First, according to the reading, it is implausible that the Greek were able to develop such advanced weapons due to the fact that the mirror not only was tremendous but also needed precise calculations for production. On the contrary, the professor points out to the fact that they were able to form a flat plate into a parabolic curvature. In addition, they did not require some pieces of copper plate to create the weapon.
Second, based on the experiments conducted to evaluate the time taking for a ship to start burning by means of a similar device, it can be concluded that it probably takes about 10 minutes that a wooden and stationary ship ignites. Conversely, the teacher rejects the assumption, since, on a ship, there are a variety of materials, including wood, seal and so forth. In other words, if they could concentrate the sunlight on the seal, it would take 1 moment to burn it. Consequently, the fire spread to other parts of the ship.
Third, at first blush, it seems unreasonable to invent a novel weapon, whereas, there were flaming arrows in that era. In contrast, the lecturer alludes to the difference between the flaming arrow and the burning mirror. He mentions that flaming arrows were not sufficient due to the fact that they brought out some problems. For instance, the enemy could notice them from far distances. On the other hand, Greek could burn the ship instantly, surprisingly, and effectively through the burning mirror.
