The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line graph represents the amount of goods, which were transported in the UK over 28 years from 1974 to 2002 by road, water, rail and pipeline. Units are measured in million tonnes.
Overall, the usage of all types of transport increased over period given. In this time transport by road was the most popular, while transport by pipeline had the worst position. At the start of the period, usage of rail transport was more popular than use of water transport, however, they swapped places at the end.
With regards to the quantities of goods transported by road, it began at more than 70 million tonnes and then rose up to marginal 100 million tonnes. Likewise, approximately 5 million goods transported through pipeline in 1974 and the amount picked at more than 20 million in 2002.
The same situations happened with usage of water transport, there was less than 40 million tonnes at the start and it climbed to more than 60 million in 2002. As for usage of rail, the usage fluctuated significantly, but overall it fractionally uplifted.
