4-Day Workweek
The article states that 4-day workweek instead of 5 day workweek will have several benefits to both employees and businesses and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that reduction of work days can offer some benefits but they don’t justify that converting and refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading states that 4-day workweek will reduce some expenses for employee. The professor refutes this point by stating that the reduction in expenses is true bout the amount is not logical. He explains that the amount of fuel reduction because of elimination of one day’s driving is not as much as we can count on it.
Second, the article claims that having 4-day workweek will lower the operating costs of businesses. However, the professor contends that with converting working days, businesses will lose 20 percent of their consumers. He says that working 10 hours per day leads to working until evening which the number of consumers is low on that time. So they will not have justified benefits.
Third, the reading avers that reducing number of working days will increase the time that employees can spend with their family and improve their quality of life. The lecture opposes this point by saying that this is not a significant benefit. The professor says that because of 10 hour working per day, employee should spend money for day care facilities and also will not have enough time to be with family during first half of week.
