There has been some debates among whether the electronic data base is beneficial or not.
The lecture says that keeping the medical records of the patients electronically is not beneficial. However, the reading opposes this point by saying that keeping the data base of the medical records saved electronically is beneficial.
The first point of dispute is if the electronic medical records will save money or not. The lecture claims that patient's record should be saved on paper for backup. Also, some papers records are signed by the patients so they have to be kept in the paper form. Thus, the doctors will spend more money for the storage places. However, the reading refutes this point by saying that electronic records will save money as they are easily accessed by the doctors at any time and they do not need a space for storage.
Another controversial issue is if the electronic records will prevent errors or not. The professor contents that most doctors write their notes by using pen and paper, then the stuff interpret this hand writing to electronic records. So the poor human's mistakes will not be prevented. But the author of the reading disagrees, he says that the electronic medical records will reduce the chance of errors as they are in standardization form and legible computer fonts.
The final point of dispute is if the medical records will aid the researchers or not. The lecture claims that it is difficult to access the medical records of the patients. There are a lot of strict rules and permits needed. The patients can easily lock their records except for their own treatment. Yet the reading refutes this point by saying that the medical records will help the researchers by gathering more information.
