There has been a debate why the sea cows extinct? The reading provides three theories for the extinction. However, the reading opposes and mentions that all the theories have some problems.
The first point of dispute is if the overhunting by the Siberian people cause the extinction. The lecture says that the sea cows were massive creatures and the weight of one of Them is about 10 pounds. One sea cow could feed a whole village of Siberian people for a moth. But, the reading refutes, saying that the Siberian people over hunted the sea cows and that leads to the extinction.
Another controversial issue is if the ecosystem disturbance causes decline in the kelps population which leads to the extinction. The lecture contends that the ecosystem had no effect on the kelps population. There were no evidences in the decline in the whales population. But, the reading opposes says that the ecosystem causes decline in the main sources of food for the sea cow. And that leads to the extinction.
The final issue of dispute is if the European fur traders cause the extinction. The lecture says that the sea cow population were already in decline before the arrival of the European fur trader. Other thing caused the extinction. Yet, the reading refutes saying that the European fur trader caught the last sea cow in the island.
