TPO24-integrated writing
The reading and the lecture materials have a debate on the identifications made about a 70 million years old fossil of Tyrannosaurs rex. The writer believes that T rex’s fossil contains many actual tissues, which is refuted by the lecture.
First of all, the writer states that the scientists find some soft substance in the leg bone and they believe that this soft substance is the remains of the actual blood vessels of T. rex. However, the professor opposes this claim by saying that the soft flexible substance inside is traces of soft and moist residue from bacteria colonies. It is because after an organism is dead, bacteria sometimes colonize hollows in bones, which leaves behind traces of organic materials.
Moreover, the writer says that spheres with iron and red centers could be the remains of red blood cells, while the speaker views this issue from an opposite angle. The professor says that scientists also find the reddish spheres in fossils of other animals that were primitive living organisms in the same place. To be specific, those animals had no blood cells, so the spheres cannot be the remains of red blood cells. Instead, they may be pieces of reddish mineral.
Finally, the writer says that scientist found collagen, which is considered to be in connection with bone tissues. But the professor holds an opposite opinion: collagen cannot survive for so long since the oldest collagen dates back to 10,000 years ago. And the most likely explanation is that the collagen is not from T. Rex but it may come from the skin of the researchers who are handing the bone.
