The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural land becomes less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of the world during the 1990s.

There are several factors that lead to degradation of agricultural land, which take place in almost every parts of the world. As we can see from the pie chart, over-gazing, deforestation and over-cultivation are three main causes, accounting for 93%. The rate of each cause is nearly the same as one another. Agricultural land in Europe has been seriously unproductive, which mainly due to deforestation. Over-cultivation in Europe is also very high that it ranks the highest among the three regions. Oceania, in contrast, does not have any degraded land resulted from over-cultivation. Land of this region becomes less productive mainly because of over-grazing with 11.3%. Of the three regions, North America has total land degraded of only 5%, make its land the most productive. To sum up, degradation of land results form some reasons and the extent of affect it has are different in each region.
