Summarize the point made in the lecture and explain how the speaker cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading presents some evidence indicating that Chevalier’s memoir is inaccurate due to some reasons.
The lecturer, however, finds all the idea mentioned by the reading dubious and offers some counterclaims to refute them all.
First, the author argues that Chevalier was not wealthy while living in Switzerland because he borrowed a great deal of money from a merchant.
Conversely, the speaker brings up the idea that this reason is highly questionable due to the fact that he needs to sell first his assets to spent in parties and gambling. Therefore, he had to wait to convert his possessions to money, and so borrowed some money from a merchant.
Second, the reading highlights the thought that conversations between Chevalier and a well-known writer Voltaire are inaccurate due to the fact that it is impossible to the captured detailed discussion after years.
The speaker, on the contrary, asserts that Chevalier recorded these conversations every night immediately after their discussion, and so he refers to those documents composing his memoirs.
Finally, the author holds the view that the story of the Chevalier’s escape from prison is inaccurate and he did not make a hole in the ceiling, but he had some well-connected politically friends and they help him to free him from prison.
In contrast, the speaker dismisses this idea due to the fact that there were a number of persons in prison who have some friends to help them, but they could not escape. However, Chevalier could be climbed out of his cell because he uses a piece of metal and escape. There are some old documents verifying this issue that the ceiling of the prison was repaired after his escaping.
