Both the reading passage and the lecture talking about the declining in the yellow cedar tree, a species of tree common in northwestern North America. The article avers the hypotheses of declining, while the professor opposes these hypotheses by saying we still do not know what killing the tree and none of these explanations are convincing. And he argues each one of these as follows.
First, the passage states that declining of the yellow cedar tree may occur because of beetle, type of parasites insect. However, the speaker claims that by pointing the healthy cedar park, who is the beetle attacked, contain a chemical component that should kill the beetle. And this insect eats just the dead one. So the damage caused by the battle is not fundamental.
Second, the article discusses the brown bears are one of the causes of the declining because they are feeding on the tree park. Although the professor counters this point by telling the bears are not responsible for this declining because the declining occurs on another island with no bears, so this hypothesis is also rejected.
Third, the passage points out the gradual change of the weather as one of the explanations of declining because the root damaged from freezing. On the other hand, the professor casts doubt on this point by explaining that dying is happening not only in the high elevation also in the low altitude. If the death occurs by the low-temperature island so why the declining is more in the high heat elevations? By that, the professor also contradicts this explanation.
