The pie charts illustrate how much water industry, agriculture and households use in six areas of the world.
Overall, it can be seen that agricultural activities consumed the most significant amount of water for most regions. However, there are two exceptions to this trend, which are North America and Europe.
In details, up to 88% of water used in Central Asia was to serve agricultural purpose, which was followed by the figures for water used in agricultural section in Africa (84 percent), South east Asia (81 percent) and South America (71 percent). However, while in South East Asia, the industry sector requires 5 percent more of water than domestic use does, the other three areas see the opposite relation. Most notably, the figure for household use of water in South America nearly doubled that for industrial use.
Unlike these regions, water in both Europe and North America is mainly used for industrial activities (53% and 48%, respectively). In addition, both areas exhibit similar patterns for water used in agriculture and households with the ratio of the two figures being 3:1 for North America and slightly higher than 2:1 for Europe.
