TPO-17 - Integrated Writing Task In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States, birds in particular. Unfortunately for b
The reading and the lecture are both about the effects in bird population with regards to increasing human population and use of pesticides. The author of the reading believes that in the United States there will be gradual decline in bird population. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that when human population continue to grow in number then habitat of birds will disappear. The author mentioned that more areas are being converted to home, malls and offices, thus, community of the birds are being destroyed. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that Urban development will be beneficial to birds, hence, will increase the size of their inhabitants. Furthermore, He argues that birds can be see anywhere in the streets lurking peacefully such as falcons, hawks, pigeons, thus, they can contribute to lowering the pest in the community by preying on rodents. In addition, there will be slow decline in bird population in the future, but rather there will be increase growth in population.
Secondly, the author contents that as a result of number of people in community, agricultural activities will also flourish. The author establishes that the growth of population will end up in destroying the inhabitants of the birds and turn them into agricultural area. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that more agricultural will be allocated and it will increase the production of crops for the community to feed on. He elaborates on this by mentioning that there is no need to destroy wilderness.
Finally, the author states that the more people settle with the area, thus more pesticides are use on crops and farm lands. The articles explains that the vast use of pesticides can greatly affect the population of the bird to decline. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that people are aware of the consequences in the use of pesticides and made steps to stop the use of this harmful chemical. Moreover, He puts forth the idea that manufacturer alter the design of the pesticides by making it new and less toxic to the birds and they come up with a genius idea to be a pest resistant which makes it unattractive or unpleasant to pest, so, there will less consumption of pesticides and that birds will not be harmed with its use.
