The table below presents the number of children ever born to women aged 40-44 years in Australia for each year the information was collected since 1981.
The table compares the changing pattern of number of children that were born by Australian women who were at the age of 40 to 44 in the year of 1981, 1986, 1996 and 2006.
Overall, number of children born significantly reduced from 1981 to 2006. Moreover, two-children family remained as the dominant group over the 25-year period.
In 1981, it is clear that around one-third of the Australian women gave birth to two children, where the figure stood at the highest among all the groups given. Likewise, numbering some 27%, families with three or more children ranked the second. In stark contrast, a mere 8% of the Australian females chose not or to have only one descendants, which was staggering three times less than the those gave born to two children or over.
From 1981 to 2006, evidently a conflicting trend could be witnessed between Australian females who gave birth to less than 2 children and the group with more than 2 children. While the figure for four or more children halved from 27.6% to 11%, a twofold rise happened for the case of having none or only one child. Meanwhile, families with two children remained as the highest figure with significant increase to peak at 38.3%. Lastly, women who gave birth to three children decreased gently by 6% to 21.5%, becoming the second prevailed option among Australian women.
