Rembrandt is a famous...

The author and the lecturer both are about the painting known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman
in a White Bonnet. The reading passage states that the painting is not the work of the Rembrandt
whereas the lecturer suggests that the painting is the original work of the Rembrandt. The
lecturer has effectively challenged the main points mentioned in the passage by giving cogent
reasons.

First of all, according to the passage the dress of the woman in the painting is inconsistent
because of usual combination of linen cap that only servant would wear and the luxurious fur
collar that no servant could afford. However, the lecturer disputes this point by stating the
conclusion of the experts. She says the group of researcher has concluded that there was no fur
collar on the original painting, after the x-ray test and different analysis were done. She adds, the
fur collar was added after hundreds of years of the art work to increase the value of the painting.

Second, the reading passage suggests that light and shadow do not fit in the painting. On other
flip, the lecturer refutes this point by mentioning, when the researchers removed the fur collar
that were added on the top, they found that light and shadow perfectly matched as in other art of
Rembrandt. Furthermore, she states that the original painting never had woman’s face in shadow;
it is actually because of added dark fur collar.

Finally, the reading mentions that examination of the back of the painting shows the painting was
done on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Nevertheless, the lecture argues
with the author and states that when the fur collar had to be added on the top of the painting, the
size of the panel was increased. But the original painting was done with single panel and the
wood used for the panel was from the same plant which can be found in Rembrandt’s other
paintings. Hence, the painting is the original work of Rembrandt, she concludes.
