The table shows the proportions of pupils attending four secondary school types between 2000 and 2009.
The table illustrates the percentages of the student attendance in four different types of secondary schools from 2000 to 2009. Overall, the most noticeable finding was while the attendance at community schools was increasing, attendance at the other three schools gradually decreased over the whole period.
In 2000, the majority of the pupils preferred the voluntary-controlled schools which accounted for 52%, followed by grammar schools with 24%. Specialist schools and community schools had a similar attendance with 12% in 2000.
In 2005, voluntary-controlled schools experienced a dramatic decline in pupil numbers, which fell down to 38%, however, remained still be the most chosen school type. Community schools, on the other hand, showed an increase in the number of pupils and became the second most chosen school type with 32% in 2005. The rate of attendance at grammar schools and the specialist schools fell slightly and accounted for 19% and 11%, respectively.
In 2009, community schools became the most popular school overtaking voluntary-controlled schools with 58%. All the other three school types continued to show a downward trend and voluntary-controlled schools finishing the period at 20%, grammar schools at 12% and specialist schools at 10%.
