The information below gives details about household income and spending on food and clothes by an average family in one UK city in 2010 and 2013.
The table illustrates the amount of income and expenditure on food and clothes of a household in Britain in 2010 and 2013; whereas the pie charts show how their spending on food and clothes was broken down in 5 categories. Overall, it is clear from the table that the total income decreased in 2013 while the expenditure saw a slight increase. The proportion spent on fruit and vegetables rose sharply over 3 years.
The total income declined significantly by £4000 over the period surveyed, from £29000 to £25000. Despite the declining trend, the amount of money spent on food and clothes experienced a rise of £1000, reaching £15000 in 2013.
Taking the expenditure on food and clothes, the proportion spent on clothes fell by 10%, from 22% to 12%. The number of bucks spent on meat and fish also followed the former to see a 10% decline to 15% in 2013. On the contrary, the percentage of spending on fruit and vegetables and dairy products both increased notably. The former rose gradually from 20% to 35% while the latter just went up to 20% in the end. The figure for other food and drinks remained unchanged.
