This flow chart demonstrates how a species of large fish called salmon grows up.
Overall, there are total three stages of salmon growth and the time span of each stage varies from 5 months to 5 years. For the following paragraphs, more detailed information will be provided.
In the first stage, salmon eggs are laid between the reeds and small stones where the water current is slow, which is normally in the upper river. In this stage, it takes approximately 6 months for salmon eggs to hatch and the salmon in this stage called "fry" and the length is about 3 to 8 cm.
Next stage happens in the lower river. The salmon grow up gradually from 8 cm up to 15 cm which is doubled the size of the first stage. However, it takes roughly 4 years to grow up to this size which is called "smolt". Then, the smolt will move the open sea for their final growth stage. The salmon in this stage called "adult salmon" and it takes about 5 years to become the one we see in the fish market. The adult salmon will migrate to the upper river to lay the eggs and the life cycle will repeat.
