The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph compares among Sweden, USA along with Japan in terms of the percentage of the elderly older than 65 year-old over the period of a century.
It is clear that Japanese senior citizens had accounted for by far the lowest proportion of population aged over 65 years since 1940, but Japan will see the highest proportion in the last decade of the period. In contrast, the US is expected to have fewer aged citizens than Sweden and Japan in 2040, despite its larger percentage in the beginning.
In 1940, the average old population in Japan was the lowest in comparison with the other two countries, with only 5%. The equivalent figure for the US was almost double that of Japan, at roughly 10%. Since then, the percentage of the aged American residents had gradually increased, peaking at close to 25% in 2040. By contrast, the proportion of elder Japanese population still remained relatively low at between 3% to 5% during the first six decades of the period.
With respect to Sweden, its ageing citizens saw a stable rise from 1940 to now, heading towards to 25 % in 2040. Interestingly the proportion of old population in Japan was predicted to overtake the other two counterparts thanks to a considerable growth of over 15% in the later 30s.
