The graph below gives information about car ownership in Britain from 1971 to 2007.
The line graph illustrates the changes in the number of cars per household in Britain between 1971 and 2007.
Overall, car ownership in Britain increased over the period shown. Also, the proportion of households with two cars rose while the opposite is true for those without a car.
In 1971, nearly half of all British households did not have regular use of a car. Around 44% owned one car, but the figure for households with two cars was well below 10%. It was uncommon for British families at that time to have three or more cars, with only about 2% of families falling into this category.
Over the period of 36 years, the percentage of households having one car remained stable. In contrast, the proportion of families who own no car and two cars experienced a significant downward and upward trend respectively. By 2007, these figures were nearly the same at approximately 25%. There was a gradual increase in the proportion of households with three cars or more, which reached around 7% at the end of the given time frame.
