altruism
The reading states that Altruism is a type of behavior in animals and humans in which they sacrifice their own interest for other members. The author provides two reasons of support. However the professor explains that in new studies it has been found that they aren't completely selfless deeds .She also refutes both of the author's reasons .
First, the article asserts that humans sharing food and donating organs to relatives or strangers is an example of altruism. On the other hand the professor opposes that .She mentions that the donors will receive some sort of appreciation from the society as well as they will feel some kind of self worth. That's how it's not unslefish behavior according to the professor .
Second, the author posits that Meerkats show some altruism behavior. The professor doesn't agree with that. She provides recent scientific findings about this .The studies showed that the sentinel eat before stand guarding which means that they already have a full stomach and they didn't sacrifice their food for the other members to eat and hunt whilst protected by the sentinels. Also, the members who are hunting are in greater danger than those who are stand guarding .
The professor adds another fact that disputes the author's opinion about the Meerkats. She states that being a standing guard give them a better chance to escape when they see an incoming predator .This clearly supports that being a standing guard isn't as selfless as the article shows .
