The histogram illustrates how the proportion of residents rented and owned accommodation in England and Wales during the period from 1918 to 2001. Overall, in the beginning, the percentage of owned accommodation was at a lower level than the rented share. but, in the end, rented accommodation was surpassed by owned accommodation.
Focusing on the detail, households owned accommodation only occupied approximately 23% in 1918. After a sharp jump, it remained at 30% in 1939 and 1953. Following this, the percentage of owned accommodation experienced a significant increase and finally reached almost 70%. but there was a slight decrease of about 5 per cent between 2001 and 2011.
By contrast, households in rented accommodation accounted for almost 80% of households, while the proportion sustained at about 69% from 1939 to 1953, it has declined constantly and was caught up by owned accommodation in 1971. Eventually, in 2001, it hit rock bottom, which is approximately 31%. Since then, the percentage of owned accommodation had rebounded slightly and reached 36% in 2011.
