Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.
The requirements at work place are very dynamic and so are the skills required to handle them. This skills can be developed over time through work experience, however, nowadays, employers prefer people who can take on the challenges at work from the start of their employment. This is where the universities come in. The society expects the university to produce graduates that are capable of surmounting these challenges. The universities can achieve this by requiring every student to take on a variety of courses outside the student's field of study.
When students take courses outside their field of study, they meet students from other fields which will allow the students to learn from one another and as well gain new insights from the course. The students from different field of study bring with them different ways of tackling different problems. This will foster the learning of new ideas.
In addition, competition and cooperation are key leadership skill that students acquire when they take courses outside their field of study. Through joint tasks with other students from other fields of study, they learn the basic principles of cooperation. They also learn to compete healthily. Apart from the joint tasks students are given tasks that they have to carry out individually. In doing this the strive to be the best, learn from what other have done and use it to improve their solutions.
Finally, producing graduates that capable of taking on the diverse problems and skill-intensive issues in our world require people with diverse skills and background - an obligation the university owes the society. They can achieve this by engaging students in variety of courses outside the student's field of study.
