Both reading and listening section presents two opposite perspectives toward the effect of planting the genetically modified trees. While the passage lists the three main benefits of this cultivation, the lecturer claims the contradictory to these benefits and presents some clues to call into the question those benefits mentioned in the reading part.
First of all, the text posits that for the sake of the genetically altered trees' hardness, they survive longer than the natural trees. However, the professor casts doubt on the accuracy of the assertation. As she said, this genetical change causes the trees to be resistance to the specific conditions and cannot handle other types of harsh situations. Besides, as they get uninformed by this genetical alteration, their survival reaction to the threatening situation is identical. Therefore, if one of the trees cannot withstand the condition, all changed trees will not. Meanwhile, the nature trees because of their various level of persistence over the various and serious threaten, there is the chance of survival for few trees of each species.
Next, the passage assumed that these modified trees as grow faster can lead to financial profits. On the other hand, the instructor mentioned that this type of trees possesses a hidden cost which nature trees do not have. For instance, there is an extra charge for the cultivation of the genetically modified seeds. Furthermore, according to the established law, for each cycle of harvesting and planting of this type of tree, the farmer should pay an extra fee to the company.
Finally, while the article assumes that the modified trees are beneficial for the wild tree; the audio casts doubt on the validity of this assumption. As the professor discussed, the genetically altered trees grow aggressively among the wild trees. Consequently, they opt the sunlight, water, and nutrition before the ordinary wild trees can access them. Therefore, the modified trees growth processes hinder the other wild trees' growth.
