Summarize points in the lecture being sure to explain how they oppose specific points made in reading passage
Altruism is a selfless act which is done by any animal. Altruism is doing something without expecting anything in return. Lecture states that in any field new findings often cast a doubt on old beliefs and findings.
The passage mentions that the Sentinel meerkat stands guard and looks out for predators while other meerkats hunt for food or are eating food. The passage states this as an act of altruism but lecture states that on further research it is seen that the sentinel meerkat eat before guard. So, the sentinel meerkat is full stomach when they are guarding so this cannot be considered as an act of altruism.
Secondly, the passage state that, the sentinel meerkat alarms other meerkats in case of any danger. The sentinel meerkat has to flee alone and puts itself in great danger. But lecture oppose this by saying that, the sentinel meerkat is the first one to know about the approaching predator and can escape easily as in most cases he is guarding near the burrow and can flee easily. In case of any danger all the meerkats come together or else start running, this distracts the attention of the predator from the sentinel meerkat and it can flee easily into the burrow.
Thirdly, the passage mentions that in case of humans, donation of body parts among family members or even strangers is considered as an altruistic act but lecture the states that if a human donate a kidney to a stranger or a family member he/she receives appreciation in return and he/she feels self-worth about him/her so this cannot be considered as a act of altruism.
