tpo 51 elephants
There are many beliefs that humans hold about elephants. Some people claim that elephants are aware of approaching death, can create art and are even afraid of mice. The professor gives a lecture which casts doubt on each of these ideas.
Although it appears that elephants know when they are going to die, the lecturer claims that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, the elephants usually go to wet areas near water as they age. This is because the food there is easier for them to chew and digest. Due to their age, their teeth are not as strong and this explains why they leave the herd before their deaths. This explanation is more credible than the explanation provided in the reading passage.
Even though elephants are said to be the only animals with the ability to make art, the truth might be more difficult to assess. It is claimed that they can hold paintbrushes and create representational art: flowers, elephants and even themselves. The professor explains that the art is directed by the art instructor who rubs the elephants ears, which is pleasurable. Therefore, it is hard to know exactly what is made by the elephant and what is simply copied and repeated due to the conditioning they receive.
The final point is the most bizarre. Elephants are famously afraid of mice and, in some experiments, they backed away from a group of mice. The lecture contends that elephants are not afraid of mice per se, they are simply afraid of things they don't recognize. As mice are not familiar to elephants, they elephants tried to get away. Therefore, scientists misunderstood the reaction of the elephants, and this is just another myth humans falsely believe about elephants.
