TPO27 Little Ice Age
In the passage, the author simply holds three possible causes of the Little Ice Age. However, in the lecture, the professor states that the passage is full of holes and opposes it from all three aspects.
To begin with, in the passage, the author holds the view that the disruption of ocean currents may cause the cooling effects. Nevertheless, in the lecture, the professor provides evidence to disagree. He illustrates that the cooling effect only occurred in Europe and America but not in other places like Australia, so it is not convincing that ocean currents caused the cooling.
Besides, the second point the professor uses to cast doubt on is volcanic eruptions. In the passage, the author considers that the dark clouds would block some sunlight from reaching Earth's surface so that it can cause Little Ice Age. On the contrary, in the lecture, the professor just assumes that there was no report on these visual effects such as colorful sunset during that time, so it is difficult to make the conclusion.
Another evidence the professor provides to refute the passage is substantial decreases in human populations. In the passage, the author makes the point that the decrease of people may cause the increase of the trees, and in this way, the carbon dioxide which can warm the earth decreases. Conversely, in the lecture, the professor states that the population increased quickly and forests would be cut down for crops soon.
To sum up, the author may ignore some factors and the conclusion needs to be seriously discussed.
