TPO 40: Integrated writing task
The main idea of both the reading passage and the lecture is about the possibility of setting a station for the permanent human presence on Venus. While the lecturer claims that there are unsolvable problems regarding this plan, the lecturer proposes a solution which he believes would be able to address the mentioned problems by the author.
First of all, the author mentions atmospheric pressure on Venus's which is 90 times greater than that of earth and hence, anything lands on Venus would be crushed by this pressure. The lecturer proposes the idea of a floating station in Venus's atmosphere 50 Km above its surface. He explains that by increasing altitude the atmospheric pressure reduces and 50 Km above Venus's surface its value is about atmospheric pressure on earth and therefore it would not crush anything.
Secondly, the author states that the main components of Venus's atmosphere are carbon dioxide, sulfuric acid and there is almost not any water or oxygen in it. Therefore, oxygen and water supplies should be delivered to Venus in an adequate amount for establishing a permanent station and it would be impossible and impractical. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that there is some chemical process in which water and oxygen can be produced from compounds such as carbon dioxide or sulfuric acid. The station can take advantage of this and produce its water and oxygen supplies from Venus's atmosphere in a sufficient quantity. Hence, there is no need to import these supplies from the earth.
Finally, the author states thick clouds in Venus's atmosphere reflect back a great percentage of sunlight into space and also the remaining is blocked by a dense layer of carbon dioxide, therefore, it is impossible to use solar power cells to produce electricity for human use on the station. Conversely, the lecturer points out that the clouds above the floating station are not so thick hence the solar power cells on the station can absorb both reflected lights from lower clouds and the passing lights from the thin upper cloud and generate adequate electricity.
