In the past century, the steady growth of the human population and the corresponding increase in agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States, birds in particulare. Unfortunately for birds, these trends are likely to continue, with the result that the number of birds in the United States will necessarily decline.
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the effect on human activities and its population growth on the decline of birds population. With this in mind, the author states that the number of birds will be more and more decline with continuing development that occure by human. The professor, on the other hand, contradicts three arguments mentioned in the passage, believing that none of them are convincing.
First, the reading selection points out that the expantion of human settlement will continue the distruction of birds' natural habitats and consequently the reduction of birds population. Conversely, the professor makes it clear that although some kinds of birds population will be reduced, there are some other birds that will experience an increase in their population. this is because they have better and larger area to live in the human settlements.
Second, the writer claims that increase in agricultural activities will result in more destruction of bird habitats as people try to develop the agriculture. Therefore, the population of birds will face a dramatic and countinuous decline in future. However, the speaker explains that the truth is every year less and less land use for agriculture due to the new crops cultivation which no need to destruction a lot of lands.
Finally, While the author argues the effect of chemical pesticides on the reduction of birds' reproducing, the lecturer explains that the traditional pesticides were harmful for birds but this problem is solved now. She says that now the geneticaly pest resistance crops are cultivated which have no harm for birds at all.
