The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.
The given illustration shows static information about the expenditure of energy by fuel in the USA between 1980 to 2012 and predicted to 2030.
As can be seen, petrol and oil are the primary fuel energy resource in the USA over the period with 35 quadrillion units in 1980 and rising to 42q in 2012. Despite some fluctuations from 1980 to 1994, there was a steady increase in 1995 and expected to continue to reach 47q in 2030.
The consumption of coal and natural gas almost had the same amount over the period. From 20q and 15q respectively in 1980, gas showed a small fall and coal a gradual increased, with the two fuels equal between 1985 and 1990. There were fluctuations between the two fuel energy sources since 1990 to 2016. The experts predicted the coal will increase to 45q, while natural gas will remain stable to 23q in 2030.
Furthermore, in 1980, fuel energy source nuclear, solar/wind and hydropower were equal at 3q. Nuclear had risen to 6q, and solar/wind to 4q, whereas hydropower had fallen back to the 1980 figure in 2010. It is expected to maintain this level until 2030, while others will slightly increase in 2030.
In conclusion, the US will continue to rely on fossil fuels with sustainable in the future, whereas the other energy sources remaining as small portions in the industry.
