Summarise the points made in lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading
The main topic of both The reading and the lecture is about a massive extinction about 200 million years ago at the end of the Triassic period. The article states that sea level, changing in the climate temperature and asteroid strike may have caused this extinction and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that there are problems with the arguments and categorically refutes each of them, citing that they are not impractical but also problematic.
To begin with, the author argues that at the end of this perid, sea levels fell and species that lived on coasts were destroyed and affected the foodchain all around the world. Conversely, this specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. Asserting that this fall was graduall and did not happen suddenly and spicies in coastal and shallow adapted to sea levels fluctuating.
Secondly, the writer suggests that massive climate cooling that caused by emition of sulfur dioxide by active volcanos destroyed many speicies. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that when sulfur dioxide releases in the atmosphere, in combines with it and generates rain. Moreover, SO2 doesn't stay long enough in atmosphere to causes lower tempererature.
Finally, the author posits that astroid attacks could have destroyed many animals. Moreover, it in the article it is states that this event could have blocked out the sun long enough for plants to die. On the contrary, the lecturer's opinion is that scientists didn't find a crater and asteroid stike happened twelve million years before the extinction.
