The reading and the lecture are both about the possibility of a permanent human presence on Venus. The passage states that it is impossible to survive on Venus due to the inhospitable conditions on this planet. The lecturer, on the other hand, categorically denies all the three episodes of arguments mentioned in the passage, believing that living on Venus is possible through the use of the station, which is floating like a balloon about 50 kilometers above the surface.
First, the author mentions that atmospheric pressure at Venus’ surface is at least 90 times greater than the pressure at the Earth’s surface. Hence, the human being will be crashed on the surface of this planet. The lecturer challenges this specific argument. He claims that the atmospheric pressure of the 50 kilometers upon the surface of the Venus is equal to the Earth’s pressure. Therefore, the human can live in the station without crushing.
Secondly, the writer suggests that there are no resources for water and oxygen. In the article, it is said that it is impractical to import these materials from the Earth. The lecturer, however, refutes this by mentioning that carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid are available on this planet. Therefore water and oxygen can be produced by the composition of the aforementioned chemical materials. Under such a circumstance, it is not necessary to move water and oxygen from Earth to Venus.
Finally, the author posits that very little sunlight reaches the planet’s surface due to the thick and dense clouds. So, solar power cells cannot be used to get electricity. In contrast, the lecture’s position is that the clouds that fill the atmosphere of Venus are not very thick. Besides, he mentions that the reflected sunlight can be absorbed in the station; therefore, the power of the station can be produced quickly.
