In this set of material, both the reading passage and the article discuss the possibility of using of burning mirror as a weapon in ancient Greek. While the readin passage contends that the story of the burining mirror is just a myth the lecturer refutes all of the reasons which have represented in the article.
Firstly, the professor articulates that the people in the ancient Greek did not made this mirror from a single sheet. They could use a dozen polish copper to made a parabolic mirror. Conversely, the essay states that ancient Greeks did not have advanced technology and making of this mirror which should focus sunlight need an advance technology.
Moreover, the lecturer avers that these mirrors do not need a large amount of time to work out. He explains that the experiment which have represented by the article have conducted on wood. However, the Romans have not made the ships only from wood. They would have used some sticky material to make the ships waterproof. This material can set on fire in a few seconds. On the other hand, the text metions that the burning mirror would have taken a long time to set the ships on fire and consequently such a weapon cannot be practical to be used in the wars.
Finally, the professor declares the Roman soldiers were familiar with the flaming arrows. consequentely, the ancient Greeks need a weapon that can suprised the the Roman soldiers and be effective. The burning mirror have had these features. On the contrary, the article says both the burning mirror and flaming arrows would have been effective at about the same distance. As a result, the Greeks could use the flaming arrows instead of the burning mirror.
