Some college teachers prefer to ask students to watch or listen to a recorded lecture before class. In class, they will ask students to do more practices about what they have learned from the lecture. Do you think this is an effective way and why?
As Thomas Jefferson expressed the essence of a university, "The college is the hall of knowledge, the cradle of talent." In order to improve students' learning efficiency, making them more qualified to address various challenges in the near future, the professors have been making an effort to improve the scientific pedagogy in universities. Some people consider that it is effective for students to watch or listen to a recorded lecture in advance since they can do more practice in class. From my perspective, I am definitely in favor of this way due to its high efficiency and convenience.
Admittedly, some people may concern that this teaching method will lower the students' efficiency rather than improve it. Because students can easily get distracted when they watch the recording alone, which can be avoided if they follow the traditional teaching form. For example, if allow the students to study at home by watching videos, with the absence of supervisor, they cannot fully concentrate on learning. They may turn to browse the websites or play computer games after they watch the lecture for just a few minutes. In addition, even though they have watched the whole video without doing other things, it is entirely possible that they may be too sleepy to capture all the knowledge points. As a result, their study efficiency cannot be ensured due to the lack of self-control as well as full focus, thus they may have poor academic performance since they have not totally understand what they have learned. Therefore, the aforementioned reasons can account for why some people disagree with this educational method.
However, although some people may regard it as a less effective way, I believe that it can maximize the students' study efficiency and ensure their understanding of the class since their questions can be fully addressed during the class. If they can learn about the class content in advance, they are able to know what they have not understood during the process, thus they can ask their professor about these questions in class and get the answers more quickly. Also, after they have absorbed in all he knowledge, if they are allowed to do some relevant practice, their knowledge can be intensified and stabilized. Consequently, they can perform well in the examinations because they have entirely understood the knowledge. By contrast, if they are educated by the traditional teaching means, if the class content is too much, they may have no time to tackle their questions. Hence, it is effective to let them watch the lectures at first and then require them to do practice in class.
What’s more, it is more convenient for them to review the class on account of the recorded lectures, which can save them a lot of time. If they find something they don’t understand or have forgotten, they can repeat the videos to deal with the problem, which means that they do not have to bother their professor or classmates. In addition, it will be more convenient for them to do reviews when the examination is around the corner due to the fact that they can watch the recordings again at home to strengthen their understanding and memory of the content instead of traveling a long distance to school to bother their professors. As a result, their make best use of their time.
In sum, even though some people may oppose this method, I am inclined to approve it since it is extremely time-efficient and convenient, by which students can maximize their study efficiency.
