Chevalier de Seingalt wrote a memoir recounting his life and adventures, his memoir becomes a precious historical source for European society in the eighteenth century. The article declares that memories of the Chevalier were altered many events to show his life more exciting and luxurious than it was and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that its memoir was pretty accurate and it was a reliable source for history and refutes each of the author's reasons.
To begin with, the passage states that Chevalier's life in Switzerland was not wealthy as he mentions in his memoir because he used to borrow money from a Swiss merchant. On the other hand, the lecturer contradicts these points by stating that to do parties and do gambling need lots of money. So he did sell his properties and to have cash on hand it takes a couple of days, during this time he might be out of cash so he probably borrows money from a Swiss merchant.
Furthermore, the reading states that the memoir of conversations between Chevalier and Voltaire is not accurate. No one can remember all that conversation. Nonetheless, the speaker says that Chevalier uses to write a note every night about his talk. And there might a possibility he kept those notes with him when he was preparing.
Finally, the article contends that Chevalier's escape from a notorious prison in Venice, Italy, was not correct. The instructor explains that there were many prisoners, they have more political connections than Chevalier. He also mentions that int he government history they did mention that celling to be repaired in the room where Chevalier was kept as a prisoner after his escape.
