TPO12-Question : Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The lecture and the reading are both about the illustration of Jane Austen. The author feels that are three reasons that justify the evidence that painting was painted when Austen was a teenager. The lecture, however, challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that these explanations are faulty.
To begin with, the author points out that in 1882 Austen's family clearly recognized the illustration as a portrait of Jane. This specific argument is challenged by the lecture. He argues that Jane Austen died seventy years before these paint. Hence, Austen's family members were not able to recognized correctly the illustration.
Secondly, the writer believes that Austen's face in the portrait resemble the one in Cassandra's sketch. In the other hand, the lecture rebuts this by mentioning that Austen's family was large and there were many teenagers who had similar face of Jane Austen. Therefore, he thinks that these illustration can be a relative of Austen family.
Finally, the author posits that the style of painting is linked by Ozias Humphrey, the person who was active exactly in the period when Jane Austen was the age of the girl in the painting. In contrast, the lecture's position is that these style of painting was not able in these period. Moreover, he says that many paint materials was not available when Austen was a teenager. As a result, he believes that the woman in the painting is not Jane Austen.
