The graph below shows the average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
The line chart compares the average amount of exhaust fumes discharged per head in four different countries, namely the UK, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal from 1967 to 2007.
Overall, while English and Swedish citizens reduced their carbon footprint considerably over the 40-year period, the Italians and Portugues witnessed a significant rise in their toxic gas output. Also, it is clear that the number of carbon emissions in the United Kingdom was the highest among others throughout the period.
In 1967, there were 11 tonnes of CO2 released by an average English, compared to only over 8 tonnes produced by a Swedish. By 2007, the number of greenhouse gases in the UK had decreased gradually to 9 tonnes. However, in Sweden, after reaching its highest point at about 10 tonnes in the first decade, the quantity plummeted to slightly under 6 tonnes at the end of the period.
Looking at the other nations, the respective amounts of carbon dioxide produced per capita in Italy and Portugal are approximately 4 and 1 tonne in 1967. From that time onwards, Italians and Portugues showed a dramatic increase in CO2 emissions by roughly 4 tonnes, whose figures ended at around 8 and almost 6 tonnes respectively.
