TPO 37 integrated- TED is not a good device and approach for turtles. the rate of their trap is not so much. there are other more beneficial ways. it cannot work for larger animals.
The article asserts that a state-of-the-art device namely Turtle Excluder Device (TED) can be incorporated to shrimpers' nests in order to make an escape way for turtles from which they can free themselves. Moreover, the passage introduces some notions of critics about this device. However, the professor overthrows all the notions and claims that experts have answered all of them. In the following, the lecturer's explanations will be discussed thoroughly.
First of all, the essay quotes that, as shrimpers say, the rate of the turtles being trapped in nests are relatively rare, more specifically the rate is one turtle in each nest per month. The teacher, on the other hand, insists that although the rate is not so big, thousands of boats are operating every day, so collectively, there will be thousands of trapped turtles each and every year. Since their population is small, this would be a serious problem for these creatures.
Secondly, the essay says that there are other approaches for protecting the turtles which have better workability rates, such as limiting the time of shrimp fishing. Nonetheless, the professor believes that this strategy is only applicable theoretically, and it is almost impossible to enforce the boats' owners to work for a specific period. Additionally, monitoring of this approach is really hard and cumbersome. However, speaking of monitoring, enforcing shrimp fishers to use TEDs is easier.
Tertiary, the passage claims that TEDs are not working well for larger kinds of turtles. The lecturer rejects this idea, mainly because she believes that this device can be easily modified for larger animals with no difficulties. When larger devices are developed, there would be no problem anymore using it in areas with largers turtles which are struggling for not becoming extincted.
