Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.
Low Gravity
The article states that sending people to the asteroids will be the best colonization option for the people and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor in the lecture explains that colonization in the asteroids is not the best option as it has some limitations, and it is impractical. The professor repudiates each of the reasons and explain the other side of the reasons.
First, the reading claims that asteroids have lower gravity, which will facilitate the spaceships for safer landing and will able to carry more equipment more efficiently. Notwithstanding, the professor refutes this point by explaining that lower gravity will cause health problem to the astronauts. He expounds that lower gravity is harmful for the health of the travelers. It will cause density loss of the muscles and bones, and the travelers will not survive in this condition.
Second, the author of the passage posits that there are valuable elements and precious metals in the asteroids, which will make the colonization more profitable. On the contrary, the professor challenges this view also and describes that the price of the precious metals and elements may not remain the same as present. According the professor, if there is cornucopia of valuable metals and elements, then the supply will increase, which will cause to decrease the price of the elements. Thus, the plan may not be profitable as assumed.
Third, the writer of the article mentions that to reach in the asteroids is easier that any other planets and the moon because sometimes the asteroids reach much near to the earth. Nevertheless, the professor opposes this reason also by explaining that it may easier to reach, but to get back may not be easy step for the travelers. He presents that sometimes the asteroids may be closer to the earth, but they have not the fixed orbit, so there is a possibility that when the astronauts will intend to get back, at that time, asteroids may be far from the earth. Therefore, to get back from the asteroids will be challenging.
