According to the reading passage, some theories were stated to indicate that zebra mussel invasion poses the serious threat to fresh water fish population in all North America, while in the listening section, lecturer argued that there are some ways to control the mussel population, and also it is not a serious threats for fresh water fish.
In the reading passage, author mentioned some reasons to show that zebra mussel's invasion in North America is dangerous for fresh water fish populations. First, zebra mussel's spread suggest that the invasion might be unstoppable, because they are carried by ships from Europe. Second, once they are carried to a new habitat, they can dominate it, because they have high rate of reproduction. Finally, zebra mussels are likely to cause decline in the overall fish population in habitat where they become dominant.
However, in the listening section, speaker pointed out some competing theories, which contradicts to passage's arguments, and he stated some controversial ideas. First, ships comes from Europe empty out ballast water in north america, which helps zebra mussel to survive and reproduce in north america, so he claimed that they can take salt water rather than fresh water for their cargo balance, because salt water kills mussels. second, if local birds notice that there are new food in the North america, they decide to migrate in order to eat those zebra mussels, which helps control the mussel population. Finally, even if mussels become dominant, it has some positive advantages for fish in the fresh water such as mussels generate nutrients for bottom eating fish.
