More and more newspapers and news channels are using photographs to support their news articles and stories. Some poeple think that photographs are not a reliable source of news while others consider photographs to be irrefutable.
Discuss both sides and give your opinion.
Although a segment of society believes that photographs are unreliable, others think that pictures with articles present undeniable truth. Even though photographs are not reliable because they can be forged easily, I believe they are essential because images can be considered as truth most of the time and easy to convey lengthy messages.
On the one hand, pictures can be doctored easily. That is to say that with the rise in technology, there are myriad software programs to photoshop the photos, by which an image can be easily distorted and present as a fact. That is how many newspapers publish distorted information with their articles. For instance, a Jawahar Lal Nehru photo, in which he can be seen in an intimate condition with 2 women, was published in many renowned newspapers to take political gain in elections and after a long time, it was proofed as a falsified photo. However, I do not support this viewpoint because many governments start taking a toll on this problem and trying to solve this problem these days.
On the other hand, pictures make news lively. Nevertheless to mention that images generally catch the attention of the reader and tell the story of the article in one view, if they are not manipulated. One does not have to switch pages and read all the written bulky writing but just look at the photo and decide whether the story is worth reading or not. To illustrate, research conducted on 10 participants by Leonard Cooper, professor at Rice University, in which participators have to see the 10 photos without reading the written text around it, 10 out of 10 have guessed the correct story without reading the text. Therefore, I believe this viewpoint should be conceived because most of the pictures are authentic and help readers to understand the frame of the story in an article.
To conclude, though images are easily maligned with new technologies, however, I believe later viewpoint has more weightage because, a large number of published photographs is genuine, and they are helpful for reader and viewers to understand the writing.
