Competitiveness is a positive quality for people in most societies. How does competitiveness affect individuals? Is it a positive or negative trend?
Being competitive is considered to be of high importance by many societies. While there are a number of implications of this trait to individuals, I believe that it is a positive trend.
The principal impact of competitiveness on individuals can be seen in their increased motivation to excel. At schools, ranging from primary to high, for instance, students constantly compete with one another in regional, national and international subject competitions. If they win, they will improve their reputation, have privileges, like scholarships, and represent their country globally, which will give them not only a sense of pride but also satisfaction. Conversely, in other aspects of our lives, competing individuals tend to be viewed as selfish. Colleagues competing with one another to land a higher position in their company, university students sitting their final exams, or applicants to universities who are taking their admission exams could be clear cases in point. This is where these people would be showing their ego.
In my view, competition is a crucial element of our society. What would happen if we had no competition in the society at all? It can be predicted that the quality of the services and goods will decrease. This is because of the fact that monopoly in markets will prevail and lead to an uncontrollable market in the society. Looking at other aspects of our life, people will lose their inner drive to accomplish important goals in areas, such as education, healthcare, economics, politics and engineering. In effect, competition-free lifestyle will perhaps be a trigger of social collapse, in the long term. It is, therefore, suggested that competition be encouraged in the society.
Overall, there are both positive and negative sides of one adopting a competitive personality, yet I strongly feel that this is a positive development in the society for without it we may face disastrous consequences.
