We have observed a gradual increase of the sea level during the last decades. It is a slow increase, and despite the alarmist attitudes of some, it is nothing to be worried about. By analyzing the data and looking into the matter clearly, we can find that this is a normal process that has happened before.
Even though we have documented a rise in the polar ice melting, this isn't the reason for the increase in the sea level. That ice is already in the water, so it displaces it already. Think of ice cubes in your glass of water, when they melt it doesn't make the water from the glass spill over. The same thing happens when the ice cap melts. Since the Ice is 90% already in water, when it goes into a liquid state, nothing drastic happens.
When it comes to the source for the increase in the sea level, we just don't know where it comes from. Many scientific agencies like NASA have stated that they simply don't know from where all this new water is coming. So it is still a great unknown to us.
The sea level has been fluctuating ever since the continents have emerged from the primordial ocean. We have seen many changes through the eons, half of our current landmass was submerged at one point. The same will probably happen later, and it will be through a slow and gradual process. Enough time will pass for humanity to adjust.
The passage and lecture talks about increase in sea levels. The speaker in lecture provide conflicting facts explained in the passage.
To begin with, the speaker in lecture clearly states that, the fluctuating sea levels are concerning and we humans should take steps to avoid the drastic consequence which will happen because of rising sea levels. However, it is written in the passage that, the increase in sea levels is quite normal and has happened in the past as well.
Next, speaker talks about the issue of polar ice melting where she agrees with the author in the paragraph, who states, polar ice melting is not the reason of rising sea levels because that ice is already in the water. To support this phenomenon, author gives an example of imagining few ice cubes in a glass of water and even melting of ice cubes will not cause water to spill over the glass. Thus, even though polar ice is melting, that ice will not cause major change because it is already considered. Even though speaker in the lecture agrees, she further mentions melting of permafrost which makes the ice melting fact more serious. She quotes that, melting of permafrost i.e. ice on land, is alarmingly increasing which directly proportional to the rise in sea levels.
In addition, she states that, the link between melting of permafrost and rise in sea levels is scientifically proven. The more harmful fact is, the permafrost is melting 100 times faster than natural. Hence, speaker from the lecture disqualifies the statement from passage, that nobody knows why the sea levels are going up?
Consequently, she adds that, the main reason behind permafrost melting is due to human activities, such as, deforestation, pollution, green house effect. Because of these, earth's environment is heating up and ultimately liquidizing the permafrost. By mentioning this point, speaker disagrees with the passage stating, sea level rising is natural phenomenon and will allow humans to adjust over time.
Speaker from the lecture discards this quote from the passage that, current situation will allow enough time for humans to adapt to the caused change. She thinks this way because, melting of permafrost will consume 20% of landmass, loosing such great quantity will be cause serious problems considering human population.
In conclusion, speaker casts doubts on all the statements mentioned in the passage by stating scientific, logical facts. According to her, humans should immediately start working to avoid such drastic change in Earth's environment.
