The charts below give information about USA marriage and divorce rates between 1970 and 2000 and the marital status of adult Americans in two of the years.
The bar charts compare the number of married and divorced people in the US in the years 1970 and 2000, and the percentage of four-marital status-type American adults.
Overall, it is noticeable that marriages were the most popular type in both bar charts. The lowest figures on the chart were for the widowed and divorced people in terms of their status of married.
In 1970, there were about 2.5 million Americans got married and this figure reached a similar level in the next 10 years. Yet, the number of married adults reached a record low in 2000, with an estimated 2 million people. This was down from roughly 2.3 million in 1990. Also, about 1 million US people decided to get divorced in 1970; meanwhile, this figure rose up by approximately 0.5 million, to 1.5 million in 1980 and then showed a steady fall over the 20-year period.
In terms of the Americans' legal status, marriage in both years rose to a peak of 70% in 1970, and nearly 60% in the year 2000 which was twofold as much as a figure for people had never got married. By contrast, the US people who were divorced merely experienced only 2% and grew slightly to nearly 10% in the next 30 years. There was almost no change in widowed figures, which remained at just over 5% over the period of 30 years.
