salvage logging
The readind passage indicates that salvage logging has advantages to the damaged forest and to the economy. However, based on the listening, such thing is certainly not as wonderful as the passage decribled, and might results more damage in the long run.
First of all, the reading claims that clean up dead trees to make room for fresh new trees to grown after a terrible fire is helpful for forest to recover from the disaster. However, the professor contradicts what the reading states. She argues that dead trees will convert to nutritions and enrich the soil for new trees. Salvage logging removes natural nutrigetion resource from forest and might cause the forest more damage.
Second, the author of the reading holds the opinion that salvage logging will also contribute to the overall heath of the forest by reducing the dangers of infestation. But the professor in the lecture refutes this point by question that insects are bad or not for the forest. She points out that, in fact, insects have been living there for a hundred years while the forest is in good condition. Besides, insects are food source to bird, from which the forest will benifit for the long term.
Finally, according to the reading part, we learn that there are still a large amount of wood after a natural disaster are usable to the industries whose production is from the forest, and it will request more worker for salvage logging. In contrast, the listening disagrees with that. It contends that the economic benefits bringed by disasters are tiny and not continuous. Besides, transporting thoes wood by helicopters is very expensive. It's worth note that addtional jobs created by salvage logging require trainied workers which locals are not having that experience.
