The chart and table below give information about what nursing graduates did after finishing their course in the UK in 2009.
The pie chart illustrates the nurses' decisions after their graduation while the table presents data on the number of nurses who chose to work in different health sectors in the UK in 2009.
Overall, it is clear that most of the nurses would work in the health sector after finishing their course, and their most common choice of destination to work in was a hospital. However, very few people chose to be mental nurses.
In 2009, students who decided to work in the health sector accounted for the largest proportion among those remaining choices, at 84%. The number of nursing graduates who wanted to study further with the ones who liked to take higher education and work at the same time consisted of 10% out of the total. Nurses after graduating who could not find a job made up only 4% whereas those who did not fit in any group above comprised just half of it, at 2%.
Of those who went on to work in the healthcare industry, 72% of them opted to work as hospital nurses, while 12.4% became midwives. 10.3% became community nurses and 1.3% were paramedics. Only 0.4% wanted to be mental nurses while the remaining 2.7% chose other career paths.
