Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Whether voluntary work should be a compulsory part of high schools’ curriculum remains a controversial question. While a number of people highly praised the merits of unpaid community service, others claim that mandatory voluntary work can have some downsides. From my point of view, the latter holds true for a variety of reasons.
First and foremost, balancing time between academic schoolwork and voluntary activities is a strenuous part to most students. It is an irrefutable fact when doing volunteer work, a student must dedicate a great deal of his time to charities and voluntary organisations, helping deprived people in the community and protecting the environment. This will bring invaluable experience and knowledge to those who can manipulate their time well. However, for students who lack time management skills, along with innumerable school assignments, compulsory unpaid community service can place a huge burden on them, depriving their energy and contributing to exhaustion and tiredness. As a consequence, those students are likely to develop health problems and worsen their academic performance.
Secondly, obligatory community services are not suitable for everyone. For instance, working for a charity in far-flung regions such as a mountainous area requires students a certain level of fitness and good physical health, so these work do not fit weak girls or unhealthy students. Other problems are related to impoverished students who can’t manage their time to join voluntary services when they are struggling every day to afford their schools’ tuition fees. Therefore, forcing students to take part in voluntary work can sometimes be counter-productive. More seriously, there are nightmare students in every class, so mandatory volunteer work would be a recipe for disaster.
In conclusion, unpaid community services shouldn’t be a compulsory part of high schools’ programmes. Not only is community services not suitable for everyone but it is also a contributory factor of worsening health and declining academic performances.
