Chevalier
In the lecture, the professor mentions that no memoir can encapsulate the complete truth. Considering this fact, Chevalier's memoir is surprisingly accurate. She then goes on refute the doubts raised by the critics regarding the legitimacy of Chevalier's memoir, as mentioned in the reading passage.
Firstly, it is very much possible that Chevalier was very wealthy while living in Switzerland. He spent a lot of his money on parties and gambling, and to acquire such amounts of money in a short period of time was not possible. He would have had to liquidate his assets to get the cash, which would have taken a few days. In the mean time, if he ever needed money, he would have possibly asked other merchants for loans. This justifies Chevalier borrowing money from the Swiss merchant, hence, quashing doubts regards his wealth.
Secondly, it is a widely known fact that Chevalier had conversations with Voltaire. No doubts have been raised against this, even according to the reading passage. There is a claim that he would write down all his conversations with Voltaire that very night. When he was writing his memoir, he must have referred to these notes and journals, and this has been corroborated by people who lived with him later in his life. This pacifies the concerns of critics claiming that there is no way Chevalier remembered all his conversations with Voltaire and penned them down years later with accuracy.
Finally comes the point of his escape from the prison in Venice. The lecturer asserts that there were many other prisoners with much more powerful friends in Venice, but they were not able to get out of prison. Given that this was true, it does not hold up that Chevalier's influential friends were able to bribe the jailers to free him. There are also documents belonging to the Venetian government referring to ceiling repairs in that prison, which would support Chevalier's account of a daring escape.
Through the above mentioned points, the lecturer questions the doubts raised by the critics, and provides details to support the accuracy of Chevalier's memoir.
